Teachers in Catholic Schools Delving into Math Common Core Standards and Instruction

During the week of July 28 through August 1, about eighty teachers attended several days of training on the new Math Common Core Curriculum and Instruction.  We met at Queen of Heaven School in West Seneca for five days of training with Gail Smith.  Gail is a retired math educator from the Ken-Ton School District  and is currently working with the State Education Department in developing the fourth grade curriculum for the Common Core Math  Modules found on Engage New York.   Teachers spent time understanding how and why the math units are designed and how to use instructional strategies to develop deep conceptual knowledge about the standards.  The teachers had an opportunity to work together with other teachers from similar grade levels to plan and prepare for the new school year.  These workshops will be followed up all year with in school coaching to provide support for teachers as needed.  We are all learning together and look forward to the working together for the benefit of all students.
