Catholic Alumni Network - A Link to the Future of Catholic Schools

Mon, Jun 22nd 2015 02:00 pm

The Catholic Alumni Network (CAN) is a burgeoning group of 20 and 30-somethings interested in using their time as well as their personal and professional talent to support the Catholic schools responsible for setting the foundation that enabled them to become the successful men and women they are today.

The group had their initial meeting earlier this spring, to network and discuss plans for the future of the organization.  When asked why they thought the group was a good idea, Maggie Henderson replied, "We want to give back and share our gratitude to the Catholic community that shaped who we are."

CAN will provide a vehicle for young professionals to network and reconnect with fellow alumni.  The volunteers will work in schools as board members, coaches, mentors and advisors while serving as ambassadors for our elementary schools, furthering the mission of Catholic schools within the community.

"I am so pleased with this group," said Secretary for Education, Carol Kostyniak, "current research indicates that many so called Millennials are pulling away from their Catholic roots.  This amazing group of alumni seems to be bucking that trend by demonstrating a great appreciation for the strong foundation they received through their Catholic school education.  They are excited and eager to make sure that the students of today have that same opportunity."

When asked why she joined CAN, Gina LaPlante, another founding member of the group responded, "As a young professional, I have noticed that the core values of many of the local companies in our community speak about integrity, respect, striving for excellence and personal responsibility.  These values were instilled in me at a very young age through my Catholic education and are still being instilled in young Catholics today.  A faith based Catholic education not only prepares you for academic success, but also for future professional success.  The Catholic Alumni Network (CAN) affords young adults such as myself a way to give back; a way to say thank you for preparing us so well for life.  Through volunteer opportunities and networking events with other like minded individuals, young adults in their 20's and 30's CAN DO just about anything to help future generations share in that same experience and preparation for life."
