The STREAM transformation at St. Mary's School (http://www.stmaryschoolswormville.org) continues with the launch of Montessori preschool for the 2015-2016 academic year. Montessori prepares students in initiative, focus, independence, and accountability for easy transition into a more traditional setting.

According to Mary Jo Aiken, principal, St. Mary's School, "St. Mary's Montessori preschool will be a stepping stone to the hands-on K-8 STREAM curriculum and will provide the very best in practical life, sensory, language, mathematical, geography, science, and faith and formation work for children preparing for their kindergarten and elementary years."

The Montessori approach to education is scientifically based upon the work of Dr. Maria Montessori, a physician in Rome, who, in 1896, saw a need to care for her young patients educationally by reaching them at their developmental levels with hands-on materials that could teach various concepts. Montessori education incorporates hands-on tools and manipulatives to engage all learners and encourages a lifelong love for learning.

The combined three-year-old through six-year-old classroom establishes a "family" setting in which the youngest students are nurtured by the older classmates, who act as mentors.  As children grow, they, too, will become mentors for the younger students who join the class.  In addition, the multi-age Montessori classroom enables children to self-pace through the rich curriculum, excelling where mastery comes easily and taking time to master more challenging works.

An informational session will be held on Thursday, February 26 at 7 p.m. in the Parish Center (6919 Transit Road, East Amherst, NY 14051) to provide an overview of the program and a demo lesson.  For more information about St. Mary's School, visit http://www.stmaryschoolswormville.org.
