The Pope's Visit to the U.S. Recap Pt. 1

Pope Francis concluded his 2015 Papal visit to the United States last Sunday, as hundreds of thousands of Americans gathered all around the country to see the leader of the Catholic Church. For families of Catholic and Christian schools in Buffalo and all of WNY who weren't able to travel to see Pope Francis, or weren't able to watch the live coverage, here is a recap of his busy visit.

September 22

The pope touched down in America at a U.S. Air force base in Maryland around 4pm.

There was an enormous showing for the welcoming ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House. Pope Francis met privately with President Obama and spoke publicly with him from the South Lawn of the White House.

Mr. President, together with their fellow citizens, American Catholics are committed to building a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive, to safeguarding the rights of individuals and communities, and to rejecting every form of unjust discrimination.

 The pope  followed the White House speech by greeting the masses and traveling to St. Matthew Cathedral to celebrate a midday prayer and speak with U.S. Bishops. Pope Francis then traveled to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to celebrate an outdoor mass.

September 24

 For the first time ever, Pope Francis addressed a joint meeting of Congress at the Capitol, which was broadcast live.See the Full speech here.

 Even in the developed world, the effects of unjust structures and actions are all too apparent.

The pope then made a brief appearance from the porch of the U.S. Capitol, before visiting Saint Patrick's Church, and delivering a blessing to clients and homeless gathered for the St. Maria Meals Program of the Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of Washington.

 From there the pope departed from Washington and flew on Shepherd 1 to New York City, where he held an evening prayer at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
