STCS wins Outstanding School honors at Alfred State College Science Fair

OLEAN — Students from seven different schools participated in Alfred State’s annual science and technology fair. Alfred State professors served as judges. Students demonstrated their projects and answered questions from the judges.

Southern Tier Catholic School took three awards back to their Olean campus, including Outstanding School in the Junior Division School Award. Junior Division Individual Awards went to Caleb McAndrew (first place) with What’s more trustworthy, Wikipedia, Chat GPT or a college student? Second place went to Jack West for his Catapult challenge. Ireland Kramer took a second place Novice Division Individual Award by testing disinfectant wipes.

STCS science teacher Lois Housler said, “I am so proud of these fourth through sixth graders at Southern Tier Catholic School. They had researched a wide variety of topics including bacteria, artificial intelligence, simple machines, catapults, elephant toothpaste, glass cleaners, baking soda and vinegar rockets, attractants and repellants for slugs. They brought home two second places, a first, and a silver plate for outstanding school junior division. There were 40 projects at the fair. I am so proud of these students for challenging themselves.”

Students from seven different schools participated in the March 5 science and technology fair. Students from Alfred-Almond, Canaseraga, Canisteo-Greenwood, Hornell, Portville and Wildwood BOCES competed against Southern Tier Catholic in three divisions.

Alfred State professors, staff and students served as judges. Students demonstrated their projects and answered questions from the judges. After a series of deliberations, the results were announced and celebrated by vice president for Academic Affairs Carrie Cokely, Ph.D.
