The students enjoyed listening to Major Pautler read them a book about the first flight across the English Channel. He then talked about the Wright brothers as pioneers, and explained to the class what it is like to be a pilot for the Air Force. The children had many wonderful and inquisitive questions answered such as, "What is it like to be away from your family for so long?" and, "What do you like most about flying an airplane?” When the visit was over the students were left with admiration and motivation to learn more about flight and how the Air Force helps our country. They were able to immediately go online and take turns finding resources to add to their understanding. A thank you card was the final step for that day but the information about and the memory of that special visit are sure to last a while.
